Through the hushed and dreary mist…

31 10 2007

Actually, it was bright, cheerful, and about 65 this halloween night. I decided to head out running before returning to the ol’ family home to hand out candy (somehow everyone else in my family was gone, so it was me, the person least suited to handing out candy to small children, who was left with the job). Apparently, the years between now and the last time I went trick-or-treating have skewed my judgment. Kids were already out and about at 6pm. As I was dashing through one neighborhood, some parent said “Aren’t you a little old to be out here?”. I’m not sure how I gave the impression that I was out collecting candy. Maybe she thought I was on the run from a gang of candy thieves, with my candy bag concealed in my running apparel. Whatever.
My youngest brother went out as Wikipedia Man. I have to say it was a pretty clever costume. Nothing like his Plan A, though; he was working on making a origami ground beetle costume out of a 8′-by-8′ sheet of paper. Unfortunately he didn’t finish in time.
My run took me to the Aldo Leopold nature center. Nice and quiet.

10 Miles to the Skyline

30 10 2007

This morning I ran 10 miles to Skyline Dr., an extremely hilly route, but very enjoyable. I was bemused to see 4 or 5 dump trucks driving loops around a block in some secluded, high-class neighborhood. Huh?
I really picked it up for the last mile or so, running a 6:50.
I felt great, but for some strange reason, my calves are really sore. My legs were no were near this sore just a few weeks ago, when I did quite a few longish runs in quick succesion, while rowing was still in season.
A mystery. Maybe it’s my body catching up with me, saying ‘WTF man. I want a rest after that long bus trip!’
Anyway, I’m looking forward to really increasing my training volume in the next few weeks. Tommorow after work I’m going to bike around a bit to check out some local outdoor tracks, to see if I can use them for interval training.

Back from Columbus

28 10 2007

I’m back from Columbus, and done with rowing. Wow. I am tired.
We finished up with racing at about 4pm yesterday, left Columbus around 5, and got back into town at about 2am, after which we unloaded the trailer and rigged boats before putting them back into the bays.
As it so happened, it was the night of the annual halloween party for the students, so State st. was packed with people who were having trouble walking straight.
I finally got to sleep at around 3:30.
This morning I got up and made delicious deep dish pizza and brownies. Yum. They were very popular.
This evening I went on an 8-mile run around the arboretum, as the sun was setting. I had a lot of fun, and it was a good time to stop thinking about all the stuff I’ve been dwelling on recently. I feel refreshed.

About to leave…

25 10 2007

We leave tomorrow for the last Regatta of the season. Wish me luck.
When I get back I’ll be running (and blogging) like crazy!

Arboretum Run

21 10 2007

This morning I ran 8 miles through the arboretum. It was really nice to be out. We’re having a sort of Indian Summer here, and it was aout 65 degrees and quite sunny.
On my way by, I took a look at the local private college’s outdoor track- I’m still not sure if it’s available for public use or not. I may just have to go run on it and see if they kick me off.

Longest Run of the Week

19 10 2007

Today was the longest run of week 8, 10 miles at an 8:18 pace. I ended up running through quite a bit of construction, but the workers pretty much ignored me as I dashed through.
A cold rain was falling the whole time, but I enjoyed it never-the-less.

Second Longest Run of Week 7

17 10 2007

This morning I got up early to run 7 miles to the entrance to Picnic Point. It was great weather- about 50 degrees, with a beautiful sunrise. I didn’t feel tired at all from running intervals yesterday. My right hamstring and both deltoids are very sore from rowing, though. A little frustrating since we weren’t working that hard the last couple days.

We got our first midterm tests back today in lab. I was appalled when I saw my score, until I looked closely at the component parts and realized someone had made an arithmetic error in computing my total.
Funny to think that when we (the students) are penalized for every minor error on a test, a minor error like the one made adding up my score (an error made in “real life”, that is) is simply fixed by talking with people and in the end doesn’t matter at all. What ever are they teaching us? The wrong thing, I think.

What about Kona?

16 10 2007

I almost forgot about his topic- what did everybody think about the Ironman World Championships? Pretty wild in my opinion, what with Gallo coming so close to being first out of the water, and 4 former champions dropping out with the flu.
Also, very impressive performances from several rookies, it looks like.
Anyway, what are your thoughts? Or was I the only person nerdy enough to follow this thing live?

Interval Run (and Blisters!)

16 10 2007

This morning I ran 7 x 600 Meters at 5K goal pace. For some reason I went way too fast without it feeling hard at all on the first two, and I didn’t pay for it later in the set. Anyway, it was a really nice morning for running, with some very cool banks of fog. I felt really good during the intervals set, but I had trouble jogging 2.5 miles home after the intervals. I think next time I’ll take my bike along so I can get home quickly.

I have some really nasty blisters from rowing today- a huge one on my palm, one on my index finger, and one on my thumb (of my right hand, which makes it even worse). As irritating as they are, it is kinda hard-core. Going up to shake someone’s hand, and having them pull away with a look of horror on their face… that’s where it’s at.

Sculling in the Morning

15 10 2007

I went sculling this morning, for the first time ever. My girlfriend invited me, and somehow managed to force me out of my house and into her car at 6:30am.
As it turned out, I had a lot of fun. It was much more relaxed than regular practices, with only a few people there, and a very layed-back coach. Apparently I was pretty good for a first-timer (aren’t all first-timers?).
The lake was really nice early in the morning. I wasn’t able to watch the sunrise, though. It was overcast until about 7, and then it miraculously cleared up and became sunny. I hope the water stays nice into this afternoon.
